In 1998, 11 Mexican gray wolves, or lobos, were released into the wild for the first time since they had been wiped out in the mid-1970s. March 29th, 2018 marks 20 years since that fateful day – a day filled with so much hope for lobo recovery.
Sadly, the success of those recovery efforts has been plagued by illegal killing, mismanagement and political ill-will. Today, just 114 wolves remain in the wild in the U.S.
Defenders is fighting for lobos – just as we always have – but the challenges are mounting. We can and will fulfill the promise made to lobos 20 years ago, but we are going to need more help than ever before.
Give now to help us achieve success for Mexican gray wolves and for imperiled wildlife around the country.
