While it is illegal to "fin" sharks in U.S. waters, it is still legal to trade in the fins themselves. And that supports a global market, much of it involving the horrific practice of finning in international or foreign waters. Outside of Asia, the United States is the largest market for shark fins.
To date, nine other forward-thinking states and U.S. territories have taken action to protect these critical predators that are so vital to the health of the oceans.
