 Talking Points

  • My name is [YOUR NAME] and I'm calling from [YOUR LOCATION], where I live and vote.
  • I am calling to urge [YOUR SENATOR] to protect our coasts!  I hope [he/she] will oppose the Martinez-Domenici offshore drilling bill (S. 3711), a bill that opens 8 million acres in the Gulf Coast to drilling and could pave the way to even more harmful drilling off all America’s coasts.
  • S. 3711 would threaten marine mammals with routine spills of mercury and other toxins that can poison and kill coastal wildlife.
  • Oil and gas drilling is a dirty business. From 1990 - 1999, 1.8 million gallons of oil were spilled from offshore drilling platforms and pipelines in U.S. waters -- that's almost 500 gallons per day. And in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, nearly 7 million gallons of oil were spilled.
  • Opening Florida’s coasts to drilling would do nothing to ease our energy crunch or lower prices at the pump, but it would risk our coastal wildlife, our beaches, and Florida’s tens of billions of dollars in annual coastal-based tourism.
  • America has the ingenuity to do better. There are cheaper, cleaner, faster and longer-term solutions like increases in efficiency and investments in renewable energy that will start saving consumers and businesses money today.
