Polar Bear Looking Up (Photo: NOAA)Help Defenders of Wildlife Secure Permanent Protection for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has been off limits to drilling for decades, and that's the way it should stay. The Refuge is home to caribou, polar bears, muskoxen, arctic foxes, wolverines, grizzlies, and snow geese, all of which depend on its fragile, unique ecosystem for their survival.

Big oil companies and their allies in Congress are furious that we thwarted their attempts to exploit our Defense Appropriations Bill to industrialize the Refuge.  According to news accounts, oil lobbyists are already plotting their next move.

Please call your Senators today! Tell them that 25 years of fighting the oil companies and proving that Americans want the Refuge to remain wild is enough! Urge them to support permanent wilderness protection for the Refuge - today!

Talking Points

  • Senator, please support permanent protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by designating it "Wilderness."
  • The Arctic Refuge is one of our nation's greatest wildlife sanctuaries.
  • According to the Energy Information Administration, drilling in the Arctic Refuge today would only save roughly 1 cent per gallon of gas, 20 years from now.
  • Back-door schemes as part of the federal budget process don't change the basic facts: Drilling in the refuge will ruin one of our last great wild places, for what the U.S. Geological Survey estimates is less oil than the United States uses in a year - and it wouldn't get here for 10 years or more.

If possible, please ask for the name and position of the staff member you speak with and log your call using the link above (next to your Senator's contact information). This will help us more effectively target Congressional staffers in the future.
